I am unquestionably a creative soul and need a creative outlet to survive. Editing photos is one of many arts that feed my creative need – I can get lost in it for hours. As with any creative process, there is nothing better than that “ah-ha!” feeling when you get something looking and feeling just as you’d like it. Every artist knows that feeling… it is deeply satisfying. I use several programs to edit photos – ranging from PhotoShop, Image Tricks Pro, and even iPhoto from time to time. My only tip when it comes to editing – be careful not to over-edit. I suggest editing, walking away for a little while, and coming back to it with fresh eyes before you conclude that it is done.

Here are a couple of my more fun edits. I personally enjoy the black and white effects on the (originally) very colorful car. The linear background composition paired with the black bottom quarter of the photo make the bumper stickers very visually satisfying.

The bottom two photos are a play on light. I like to think of the ‘Southern Circle’ photo as if I was the sculpture viewing the city lights at night.

There is something about a black and white photograph that brings about a feeling of sentimentality. By using black and white, you can add an air of romance, class, timelessness or mystery to an otherwise ordinary photograph. Without the distraction of color, other elements of photography will stand out more. Consequently, you must pay extra attention to lighting, textures and the composition within the frame.

Here are some examples of a few of my personal favorite black and white photographs. The one that really stands out to me is the ‘Sightseeing’ photo taken on a tour boat on the Canal in Chicago, IL. I love the story that the photograph tells. I feel that it really captures the feeling we were experiencing on the boat – feeling intrigued, yet very small in comparison to the spectacular architecture surrounding us.

Every year on Thanksgiving, I wake up early in the morning and watch the Macy’s Day Parade. As a little kid, the big highlight of the morning was to see Santa at the very end of the parade – that meant that Christmas was coming, of course! As an adult… I watch the parade for 3 reasons.

1. My parents live across the country from each other, therefore my holiday traditions have often varied from year to year throughout my life. This is my one personal holiday tradition that has always remained.

2. The Broadway previews in Herald Square. Need I say more?

3. I have mad love for New York City. Seriously… the energy of New York is unreal – crazy inspiring.

I am so excited for Thanksgiving tomorrow. I can’t wait to wake up and sit on the couch in my pajamas with a big blanket, coffee and a cinnamon role.

With all of this talk about New York City… here are some photos I took when I was there last. Enjoy – and have a great holiday!

I thought I would share a fun photography tip for the day: when in doubt, move closer to your subject.

When working with something oddly shaped or angled – it can occasionally become a challenge to get the composition of the photo just right. In this state of aggravation, this is always my next thought… my next approach. You must get VERY close to the subject – almost awkwardly so, and sometimes cut some of the subject out of the frame. Voilà! It magically becomes a much more interesting photograph.

Here are two examples.

Today was the first morning of the season that required me to wear my big puffy winter coat. 34 degrees outside… brrrr! The coldness made me reflect upon summer and warmer times… thus, I found myself thinking about my trip to the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii this summer. This photo was taken on a trail we hiked off of the Road to Hana on the north side of the island.

The flowers had fallen so perfectly on this path that it was almost surreal.

11|5|11 – I was sitting on the deck of the Monon Food Company in Broad Ripple with two of my best friends this past weekend. As we were chatting, I glanced over to the Monon Trail and saw the sun shining on this tree with the most perfect light… it was glowing! The photographer in me gave me no choice but to hop up from the table to take some photos… I’m glad I did. Autumn at its finest.
